| Every now and then a game comes along featuring a main character who breaks the mold, someone who is in possession of an actual personality and traits that go beyond having really shiny armor. On the other hand, there are also games where the protagonist is so generic, so bland and overused that you could replace him with a main character from another game and no one would even notice. What is, in your own opinion, one of the least cliched protagonists in gaming? Or, alternatively, the most? - For those who give a shit:
As far as least cliched goes, I'd probably say Jade. First off, she's... well, a she. Secondly, she doesn't dress like a stripper, something that seems to be a rarity when it comes to female characters. Thirdly, she's not white. I don't think it has to do with racism (at least not on a conscious level) but you don't really see a whole lot of non-white main characters, and what few there are are usually stereotypes. It's refreshing to see a character who is neither white nor a stereotype from time to time. As for most cliched, Marcus Fenix seems like the obvious choice. Unlike Jade, he is male, is white, and is thicker than a tree. Pretty much his only form of communication is growling bad-ass one-liners and he's encased inside a suit of armor that even a man of his gargantuan proportions would have trouble standing up in. It's hard to picture Marcus living any sort of normal life, to the point where you have to wonder what he did before the war broke out. Chainsaw carvings, maybe?

| Oddly enough, one of my least-cliché protagonists is also one of my most: Arnie Weiss from Alpha Prime. On one end of the spectrum, he's a greying old man who hates his really fucking ugly ex-girlfriend but must honor her and save someone she loves and he has a neato hacking tool that's really fun, an actual personality, and real character traits. But on the other end, he's clad in armor that takes a bunch of bullets, he has slow motion, the generic range of eight guns, and the absolutely useless ability to pick up boxes and toss them around. | |

| Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesperia http://aselia.wikia.com/wiki/Yuri_LowellHe is the only JRPG character I have ever seen that actually realizes he is in a JRPG. He even comments on the cliches of some of the other characters. That alone makes him non-cliche. Cliche? Everyone in every game of the Star Ocean series. |

| I really liked the main character from GTA:SA. Was his name Carl ? I forget.
He's been used as kind of a template from Rockstar's sandbox offering. Him, Niko from GTA IV and the guy from RedDR (jesus, I'm forgetting everyone's names), are all very similar.
They're world-weary men who are beset by fools. They're the only ones in their environments who seem to realise how ridiculous all the supporting cast are. And yet they play their part, grudgingly helping / dealing with the walking punchlines that inhabit their worlds and making the most of it.
The characters in the Disgaea series are great as well. Not cliched in the fact that they are super cliche, but completely understand that they are. Post-post-modern meta-meta-fiction style.
Most cliched ? Where does one even begin ? Though yes, Markus Fenixxx is a good start. | |
