"Realism" shooters Empty
PostSubject: "Realism" shooters   "Realism" shooters EmptyFri Nov 26, 2010 2:54 am

Anyone tried any of these? I tried the demo of ArmA II a while back, which claims to be a realism game and stuff.

FUCK THAT SHIT. It's one of the worst experiences I've ever had. Sure, the head bobbing and motion blur are very nice, and neither you nor any NPCs can take more than a small number of hits and then must use medics and such things, but that's about all that's actually good about it.

I spent my time running for a few miles across fields, and then I shot some dudes who just stood there. One of them got me too, though, so I was lying on the ground crying out for a medic while my team were focusing on some speck of dust probably on the other side of the planet yelling out random coordinates. A few of them were standing right next to me as I crawled along the ground and just kept yelling out for a medic. It took about five minutes for me to die.

It's like all these things claiming to be realistic focus on having realistic numbers, such as what damage you take, and nothing else. They just completely forget completely about quality of their experience.

I also tried Operation Flashpoint 2, same shit, except I didn't die so I don't know how poorly my buddies respond to my whimpers of help in that game. Also a million different barely useful controls. Realism != tedium. Realism != micromanagement.

Contrariwise, Red Orchestra is great and also realistic.

Yeah, I've always taken the whole 'realism' thing with a grain of salt. I understood it more back in the day when computing power was so limited that 'realism' seemed like the holy grail. But now I don't want realism, I want better than realism. Same as in movies. Is 'Die Hard' realistic ? Is it fuck. But it's a damn good movie exactly because its so over the top.

Besides, I think sometimes developers mix up 'realism' simply with 'difficulty'. I was playing Op Falshpoint 2 and opened fire on a group of soldiers miles away on some hill. They were only specks to me. Alerted to my presence they returned fire and cut me in half from a distance that I could just barely see them. Riiiiiiight. Realistic ? Nope, just hard.

Personally I think realism can be great when done right. It can add a lot of tension to a game when you know all that stands between you and death is a couple of bullets.

That's my point by mentioning Red Orchestra. I should have elaborated on it more though.

I don't feel like it right now.

Go the army dude.
That's a one hell of a realistic game. :)

It's hard to make a realistic game, coz they are hard to play by default. (coz they are realistic and blah-blah)
And these games are criticized more, because AK-47 is sounded a bit differently.
Most of the players don't like realism.
They want to be like super ninja heroes with 40 inched dicks, shooting lasers from their asses and saving hot chicks.

But I'm not that kind of person. I enjoy realism when it's done well. I just don't like when people mix up "realism" with "tedium." For instance, the forty billion controls in ArmA II. Or when they try to perfect the ballistics and completely forget about an actually enjoyable, stable experience.

Realism can be fun too. One game I played recently were realism was a good thing was Metro 2033.

Not the shooting parts, more how you need a gasmask to breeth, how a damaged gasmask needs to be replaced EMEDIATLY or how radioactivity actually kills you. Your flashlight have too be charged, your air-based weapons need to be pumped, and so on

It really puts you on the edge of your seet, making you play tacticall. Sure you sometimes aoutosave when youre out of air, and that sucks. But the feeling "Wow, Im gonna sufficate unless I do something fast" makes up for the flaws in the gameplay, in my opinion.

Its fun, I wouldnt call it amazing. Bad Ai and buggie weirdness in generall holds it back a bit, the mutant enemyies can walk trough you for example, making fighting large numbers of them a pain. The game´s Athmosphere is really good though.

I found Metro's AI to be the best I've fought in years. The human enemies take cover, flank, signal one another, and use grenades properly. The animals behave like real animals would, too.

Or, they just try to fuck nearest cover, stuck in them, pass armed granades to each other or just headshot their partners who stand in their way or run around with few knives in their eye socket. Animals? Well, if jumping from high ground and dying just to flank me or banging nearby wall is a real animal behaviour, then i must be missing something

I've never had that happen to me. Any of that. At all.

Are you perhaps playing the 360 version? I heard that one has some major problems, the most hilarious being ragdoll dancing.

Yeah, I have the 360 version and it's not so good in the AI department. The worst thing is if you make ANY kind of mistake in a stealth section, it suddenly alerts all enemies in an area. BOOOOOOO.

I have the pc-version and enemys dont shoot eachother in the head. They just often duck behind cover thats not covering them, behave exactly the same no matter how many die in front of them(I mean 13 enemys in a row running into a room were I can just aim at the same spot and shoot). You can litterarly RUN through a room full of patrolling enemys as long as you have a health pack ready. Dont get me wrong there tough foes, Im playing "ranger mode" right now and they do a lot of damage, there just dont act very intelligent.

I just watched a documentary on discovery channel about how cars dont explode when shot at, and I thought "hey, that makes pretty much every game I played unrealistic"

Even the games thats widely seen as pretty realistic (like crysis) have cars explode in a masive fireball when a bullet hits a gas tank. Any thoughts?

Everyone shut up. There's no such thing as video game realism.

If you were playing a REALISTIC SHOOTER, the game would force the volume to max and gunshots would be DEAFENINGLY LOUD, so you can experience a "realistic" shooter. The recoil would force the controller to vibrate madly and fuck your aim up completely. You wouldn't have an on-screen crosshair. You wouldn't be able to crouch walk long distances, and you would have to go through a QTE to reload a gun every time you reload it.

A single shot anywhere on the body or the head would be enough to take you out of battle. Getting shot in the head would get you killed, no matter what. Getting shot in arms, legs, etc would severely cripple you and render you unable to battle.

People would be shouting, screaming, crying, begging for help and mercy, and you would be coldheartedly tearing them apart anyway.

You don't want a realistic shooter, you want AT BEST a quasi-realistic experience. And even then, you want it to be pretty far away from real life because WAR IS NOT FUN. NOT EVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. IT'S TRAUMATIZING AND A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE.

Quote :
Realism != tedium. Realism != micromanagement.

YES IT DOES. Life is tedius and FULL of micromanagement. You have you specifically control how and where you move, how fast, and which fucking leg you put first. You have to make sure you don't trip over your own legs as you run, too.

REALISM IS TEDIUM. REALISM IS MICROMANAGEMENT.

If you went in expecting a "realism" game to be FUN, you're exactly the fucking cancer that is killing the video games industry. You're worse than the casual audience that consoles are catering to now. You're that guy that can't enjoy video games because you have no concept of what video games are.

Movie/videogame myths like this RULE the world of action. You all would be completely taken aback to learn the truth behind most of these myths.

BUNNY HOPPING doesn't work either. You can't jump six feet in the fucking air completely naked and with good wind, much less with 50+lbs of equipment on your fucking back.

I conclude my three-post rant with one statement:
Video games are fun because they are unrealistic. Movies are fun to watch because they are unrealistic. Would you watch a movie about a guy sleeping, waking up, getting ready in the morning, and driving to work? No, you wouldn't. That would be a shit movie with NOTHING HAPPENING. You wouldn't play a realistic video game either.

Not entirely true. For starters, while it's not a common occurrence, people do sometimes survive getting shot in the head. Secondly, a single shot doesn't automatically render a person unable to battle.

Some people want video games that play like real life, while others play real life like a video game.
