OK, so I know the Academy Awards are almost a joke these days, but they do serve as some kind of barometer for the year's viewing habits.
I saw Black Swan a couple of weeks ago and predicted (accurately) that Natalie Portman would win Best Actress. Not only was she good in it, it's the kind of film the Academy loves. Kind of artsy while still being completely mainstream and commerical. Oscar gold.
Which pretty much sums up The King's Speech. Honestly, it's a fine film, nothing wrong with it. But is it THAT good ? No, not really. But again it's exactly what the Academy looks for, mainstream but with a little bit of artsy credibility.
