Maintaining Fear Empty
PostSubject: Maintaining Fear   Maintaining Fear EmptyTue Mar 01, 2011 1:23 pm

I bought Dead Space 2. But then, for some reason, I decided to go back and finfish the original game. I'm not really sure why, but I wanted the whole backstory before starting part 2, despite not being a big fan of the first.

I finished the first Dead Space today. I'm glad I did. The story got better as it went along, but it stopped being scary about half way through. And why ? Because like most games these days you have upgrades. So I went from a very weak, fragile engineer to being a full armed ass-kicking alien killing machine.

It's not the first game to suffer from this problem. The Resident Evil games also move from running away to blasting zombies in half.

Anyone know any games that maintain a sense of fear and dread from start to finish ?

I'm afraid I don't play a lot of horror games, and the few I have played failed to get much of a reaction out of me. Still, I can think of an example or two I'm sure.

I suppose Silent Hill: Homecoming pulled it off to a degree. Despite some genuinely disturbing imagery it wasn't a very scary game, but it was pretty tense because A) it's really hard, b) save points are few and far between and c) while the game ramps up the difficulty later by facing you off against tougher enemies in larger quantities, you yourself get very little in the way of improved equipment. The fire axe gets the job done eventually but still isn't particularly effective, and although you do pick up a few guns, finding any actual ammo is like finding a needle in a haystack.

Oh, and note that there are only two difficulties: Normal and Hard. I was playing on Normal.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent:

Penumbra Trilogy (okay well the third one focuses solely around puzzles but it's still atmospheric):

These games probably have like three jump scares in total at most. I mean there's jumpy shit, but none of it's cheap.

Uh well its not exactly a horror game, but in Metro 2033 youre kinda voulnerble troughout the whole game.

Sure, you get better weapons and so on, but levels get more challenging. Im like on the third level on one of the higher dificulties, and it have you sneaking past like 30 trained soldiers, and they kill me in 6 shots even when I have better armor and the best weapons in the game. One of the later levels have monsters that you have to look at if you want to live, and there pretty much invoulnerble, no matter what gun you have.
