PostSubject: Something to play?   Something to play? EmptyWed Jul 07, 2010 1:10 pm

I know the community here is not very big, but can somebody give me an RPG Shooter of some sort? Something in the vein of Borderlands and/or Mass Effect.

Online Co-op preferred, but single-player offline is also acceptable.

I've played Borderlands almost more than I can handle. I want something else to busy myself with. Can anyone help suggest me something?

Alpha Protocol ? Has its fair share of problems, but is still (in my opinion) worth a play. Action shooter with strong RPG elements. Completely offline single player though - absolutely no multiplayer, co-op or anything else.

I may not be able to run that. Is there a demo?

Ok, I'm seriously out of ideas in terms of what games to play at the moment.

I've always enjoyed strategy games, mainly turn-based or a combination of turn-based and RTS like Total War. That series dipped with Empire: Total war, an ambitous but very flawed game. Shogun 2 wasn't quite what I expected, or maybe the gameplay in the series just doesn't do it for me anymore.

Other games I've really enjoyed are Fallout 3 (heavily modded), Bioshock, Half-life 2 and Elder Scrolls: Oblivion (modded). Fallout: NV was disappointing and Bioshock 2 sounds like a poor expansion to the original. Not looking to try that out.

I guess there's little point in me listing all the games I've enjoyed so I'm just going to try and describe my ideal game. That would be a single-player game with an immersive atmosphere, slightly leaning towards realism instead of silly (think more towards ARMA II instead of Serious Sam, or Total War and not Command and conquer). I would love to find a new strategy title to enjoy, or maybe an engrossing FPS/RPG game.

Any suggestions?

Ever heard of Mount and Blade? Sounds like it'd be right up your alley.

I've heard of it. A lot of people that play TW games seem to enjoy it, at least judging by the discussions on twcenter.net.

I don't really know why I've never tried it. Maybe it's because of the way it looks? Or maybe because I've been put off by some of the reviews. It seems as if the game is really focused on open-world combat and not so much on a story or coherent adventure/rpg. Anyway, the demo is in the pipeline so I'm going to give it a shot.

By the way, have you played it? If so, do you know of any essential mods? By the looks of it, the game relies heavily on an active modding community to improve the experience.

Thanks for the tip! Anything else?

Tried the demo (free play until level 7, then you have to pay for the full game). Was initially impressed by the combat system which feels quite advanced. But everything else was disappointing to say the least. Text-based dialogue only and very generic NPC interaction. Cloned cities and towns. Missions that are all very much like one another. Plus the lack of a story-driven campaign bugs me.

It seems like combat is the basic foundation of the game as well as the sugar on top. Everything else seems to revolve around recruiting a strong group of followers so that you can rescue hostages from bandits, which will get you more money, so you can recruit more followers, so you can... well, you get the point.

Yeah, it's probably not a good game for you if you prefer more structure, since there is no over-arching plot. The only real goal is to join a kingdom, become as powerful as you can and take over the world.

Mass Effect ? Not for everyone, but I love them. Immersive world. Sci-fi without being silly. Action shooter / RPG that may remind you (a little) of Fallout. I LOVE the Mass Effect games, but can also see why some people don't.

Yeah, tried them both. Pretty games. Slightly interesting characters. Weird sexual tention and raging hormones everywhere you look. I liked ME1 but got tired of ME2 pretty quick. Repetitive missions, gunfights in cloned warehouses with cover-a-plenty. Not to mention the tedious fucking probing of endless planets so you could get better equipment. That has to go down as one of the saddest developer ideas ever. The story is great though.

I'd like to try out Witcher 2, but the combat system seems a bit off there. Might get it when the price is reduced.

I agree. Even though I never finished ME2 I will probably end up getting ME3. The E3 footage looks impressive.
