PostSubject: Remakes are remakes   Fri Jul 22, 2011 7:44 am

I just saw that they've made a remake of John Carpenter's 'The Thing'. Which to be honest, I don't get.

So, I kind of understand the idea of remakes. Although I think it's a bad sign that our culture is slowly eating itself like Oroborous, in some cases I get it. After all, 'The Thing' is itself a remake of the much older 'The Thing From Another World'.

But this is the thing that I don't get. 'The Thing From Another World' was an old, campy, black and white B movie. Some good parts in it, but lots that's not so great. I can get why someone would look at that film, see what is good about it and want to improve it in a remake.

'The Thing', on the other hand, is pretty much as good as it's ever going to get. Not that it's the best movie ever made or anything, but as far as that story goes I don't really see how it can be done any better.

In other words, I think it's fair enough to remake a bad or at least a flawed film. A film with a kernel of good in there that has been overshadowed by various forms of crapness. By why take a great, classic, genre-defining movie and remake that ? I mean, what do you expect to do with it ?

I think it's because of generations. Every generation has it's own “something” that is remade in better quality. I don't think that this process is good, I think it's natural. The world has shown us that there is pretty limited amount of ideas, so remakes are inevitable. Besides, in 3 years no one will want to watch Carpenter's film coz it's old and more to that no one will watch the older version. It's a chance, in the matter of speaking, for old things to be remembered and good ideas from the past to be used in future. And besides, the crowed desires 3D. And of course: 1 producers want money, 2 old film is forgotten, 3 it's easy to make, 4 just use the goddamn 3d, 5????, 6 PROFIT.

In the long run I think It's 50/50.
In think history should remain history but sometimes I want good stories from the past be all out in sunshine and 3d (sometimes)

P.S. If you don't like remakes just stick to the older versions.

I dont think I have seen any movies that were remaked later. In fact only one I can think of at all is Clash of the titans. I didnt see it, or the remake, but my brother is a big stop motion fan, so I heard about how many, including ray harryhausen felt the remake was bad and pointless.

When I think about it, I did see I am legend. That was a remake right? But I didnt see the old one, so.....
