Served, for 10 months. But I can't really say it's the same thing here in Sweden as in the US for instance. There's no chance of anyone saying "let's go to war" over here. Well, except for those peacekeeping efforts we sometimes get involved in. But those are voluntary assignments.

Really glad I never had to do national service. I've known people from Russia, Poland, Israel, Egypt etc who have had to do it and wartime or not, it sounds like a serious pain in the arse. And to be honest, I'm not even sure how useful it is for the countries involved. Isn't it better to have a smaller but willing (probably more serious) force than a large group of people who largely don't want to be there ?

It would be like a waking nightmare for me. I hate authority and being told what to do. One of the biggest bonuses of my current job is that my boss is in another country, I see him about twice a year, he's a nice guy and he leaves me the fuck alone. That's just how I like it.

What can I say, I'm just a good lookin' rebel who plays by his own rules.

Well, I am an outlaw, actually
I can't get back to my city coz the man is looking for me for "Evading the army service". I can't get a new passport, I can't get my medical insurance, can't get a normal job... Freaking unbelievable...
And it's all because of our president who cancelled the second delay year.

I applied for the higher education and after my marriage, after a year of studies (I paid for the whole course) I received a message from my brother that I was summoned...after whole year.
The most interesting part is that I double checked before going to university.
-Should I start preparing?
-No, your file is registering. You will be informed in a month.
And nothing happened.

Like I said. This is in Sweden. It's not like we are a country known for drawn-out conflicts or massive overseas engagements. Not since the 18th century anyway.

Your time and subsequent predicament sounds a lot like how I want it not to be here. Hope all ends well for you.

By the way, I was a platoon medic, responsible for the company medical treatment centre, so I actually learned some useful stuff during my time. Well, that and how to kill people with automatic weapons of course.

Implying that killing people with automatic weapons is not useful ?

Well...only time now can help me.

I don't say that army is bad (you can learn a lot there), I just don't like how this situation affects my life. And I don’t like Russian army in general. It’s too damn chaotic, too little humanity and too much racial problems.
Basically, because of some bureaucratic mistake I have too many troubles.
P.S I know a bit of good stuff too. My uncle served in spec-ops, so he showed me some basics.

I'm not really in the business of killing too much these days, so no, not really useful. But you never know...

I have a lot of respect for those that do, but as of now, I don't see it happening.

Hey Casted, how do employers in Russia usually view people who have done their service ? Do they respect you for doing your part, or do they see it as a couple of wasted years not getting regular education / work experience ? I'm sure it depends on the job and the employer, but in general.

It depends.
Someone will respect you for that, someone will look at you as you are a waste of time.
Why? Well, in Russia there is rather strict system of getting recruits. If after school (after 11 years, or if you are 18) you failed to apply to university...then welcome.
Basically, those who served in the army don't have higher education, because not many people who return want to continue their education.

One example from my life:
One of employers, who hired me, fired me after three week when he realized that I didn’t serve in army.

But surely that has more to do with the fact that you are an illegal runaway in Russia, more then any actual disrespect? I mean, what happens if they catch you? I don't hear good things about your country (obviously, I live in the US)

Nope.
1) He served in the army and he loves it with all his heart. Army is like a home to him, so basically, anyone who didn't serve is a piece of shit for him. And it's hard to find a job if you are a student so 1+1...

2) What will happen to me? Hm...starting from HUGE fines and ending with 2 years in prison. Only because of some shitty paper.

P.S My main problem right now is not my runaway but my passport. I can't get a new one, so I have to rely on old one and it's tricky.

P.P.S. I'm not a patriot so...
Rusiia is not a bad country, I mean it. But the goverment is fucked up really hard.
I'm not a politician, but I can see that everything is going to be very ugly in Russia and US.
But to be honest, I don't care.

Russian army training was in the swedish news today. It was about how thousands of people(?) dies during the training. And a mother being interviwed claimed the army is full of coruption. Her son was apparently hunged. Now SHE said he was killed, and that he was forced to bring the other guys things when he was on leave. And the army says it was suicide.

I have no opinion, just saw it on the news and tthen remembered this thread.

Pretty much the standard situation. NOT thousands, that’s for sure, and not during the training (this is very rare), but nevertheless, people die. The army declares it as suicide, others claim it's a crime...

I remember a released video from about six or seven years ago. Some guy got fed up and leaked some video to the press - showed more senior guys beting the shit out of recruits. One thing I remember is that a bunch of guys got a medal for something or other, perhaps passing training or a tour of duty. So in the barracks afterwards they lined these guys up, shirts off, and pinned the medals to their bare chests with the hardest punch they could swing. Pretty brutal stuff.

And again, pretty standart...even today.
If you treat a man like an animal he will turn into an animal.
But all this army shit started when Russian government decided to accept prisoners for military service.
And of course it led to changes in culture and attitude...
