Red Faction: Armageddon Empty
PostSubject: Red Faction: Armageddon   Red Faction: Armageddon EmptySat Jun 25, 2011 7:03 am

Been playing this for about eight hours. I think I'm almost finished with the campaign. It's easily some of the most fun I've had in a while. It's not just a good game, but what Red Faction should have always been.

It has all of the awesome stuff from Guerrilla and then doubles it with all new awesome stuff, like the magnet gun, walkers, and a flying mission. Since it's linear, the path you progress down is specially designed (most of the time) to balance between kickass horde shooting and environmental destruction. Your main goal is usually to clear an area of enemies and how you do that is up to you. I found myself bringing their surroundings down upon them in creative ways before killing them all off and destroying whatever was left in an almost unhealthy fit of glee.

I agree. The game is awsome.
If only it had more repair missions to fully utilize the nano forge.
I loved to take whole structures down just to repair them.

Really ? I had no interest in this game, but perhaps I should check it out. The Red Faction series has always seemed to have more promise than it ever actually delivered on. Perhpas this game breaks the cycle.

It definitely does. The human enemies are still kind of dumb, but they're kept to a minimum. Most of the bad guys are gushy aliens that expertly maneuver around the environments. Destruction is no longer just a gimmick to keep you occupied (unlike RFG's destroy-building-X-in-20-seconds side missions) and instead everything is focused around using your surroundings to fuck up the bad guys. There's an hour-long segment near the end that puts you in a cave with minimal destructible stuff, but the enemies are still incredibly fun to fight, and the final hour that comes just after it more than makes up for it.

Based on Sexbad's glowing reccommendation I got this and I have to say it's pretty neat. They finally got the damage / gameplay balance right. The destruction is not just there for destruction's sake, it's now a real part of the game. Enemy on gantry ? Remove gantry with extreme prejudice. Enemy no more. Good.

Not only that, but the nanoforge is a great idea. Not only is it fun to mess around with, but it's a very clever gameplay mechanic to make sure you never get stuck. It would be very easy to blow out stairs, walkways or whatever and make the level unplayable, but with the nanoforge you can always reverse damage done and make sure you can get where you're getting.
