PostSubject: Theism (my title isn't long enough)   Tue May 04, 2010 7:33 pm

*This is just my opinion, please don't get offended*

I've been thinking about religion lately, and I've come to a conclusion about my faith. I do in fact believe in a higher being.

Now what I want to get across is that theism is NOT Christianity, or Islam or Scientology, or anything of that ilk. I don't think that we as humans should be able to dictate what God says or how our fellows should worship. How, exactly, would a priest know what the higher being, God if you like, wants us to do? They (especially the Catholic Church) can't just force their own views and opinions onto others, passing it off as "God's will". For example, before the Crusades the Pope Alexander II granted the soldiers that were about to commit horrendous crimes exempt from any form of "sin" or divine punishment. But how would he know, let alone justify this  ? I doubt God would even have approved of something like this.

Now, Creationism. Personally, I don't take Creationism for what it is. Genesis was written by a man, and once again, how would he know? I really don't understand how people can take it literally.
I believe that theistic evolution was what (maybe) took place. Maybe God created everything as it was, set it in motion and left it on its own to develop? It does sound much more plausible.

Also, I think that everyone should be able to worship (or not) in whatever way they want. How does going to a specified building every Sunday to listen to a person dictate how you should live your life affirm your faith?

...I just don't get it.

Now I don't want anyone to think I'm some hardcore fanatic advertising my cause, I just want to know if anyone else shares a similar view

Personally, I'm atheist, I have been so for a long time. I don't really mind religion and I hate atheists who believe they are so bright and smart and make comments like "Wow these people are stupid! believing in fairies and God! ahah" or thinking they are special. While I don't mind religion, I don't want it to be shoved down my throat like I'm some kind of cheap whore.

My disbelief of a higher power began at a very early age, I remember I was 4 at the time, it was in Bosnia and in 1994, a war was raging, and muslims where being exterminated. It was scary, everyday I heard mortar fire, gun shots and another thing I heard was Imams (muslim version of priests/ministers) telling people to "bear through" and that Allah will save us, and that we should all be willing to give our lives for him and that we'd get a special place in heaven if we die. During those times people hardly had food, and these imams where walking around with gold watches and eating the best meals while us, the normal people where starving, then they come and tell us to die for Allah, why don't they? why are they so special that they would rather send teens to fight a war and not go themselves? they lived perfectly long and rich lives, why don't they go to the special place in heaven? Now I'm not saying all priests and religious figures are corrupt, most of them think they are doing me and people with similar beliefs a favor by trying to spread the word, while I am thankful for that, it isn't the way for me.

Exactly! That's the main reason why I'm not Christian anymore (I was brought up as one). It's because of these pompous self-righteous "proclaimers of God" who make me so angry, and the ones who continually force someone to accept something they don't want to.

And most of those jackasses ask for donations for "God", since when did he need money?

Bump.

Yeah, I'm agnostic. I stopped trying to convince myself otherwise recently, and it's for the same reason as Infant Shaker proposed. A God that is to be exalted would not let a person live a life, however long it may be, without feeling anything but pain. Kids growing up in the ghetto not learning any of the "Good News" only to die in some passionless gang war and descend instantly into some hell...

Nope.

I hate every fuckin aspect of Christianity! I agree with InfantShaker, about the guys that collect donations for God! WTF? I personally think that the Christian Bible was written by a bunch of rebellious jews that smoked too much weed... The only thing acceptable with having religion, is the fact that some people find a lot of comfort in having 'someone' up there to help them! That's ok with me, I know someone like that....
I personally believe in karma, I don't know if that counts though :/

The fault in most religions is that the people abuse their power, telling others what God wants, hates etc. So would it be possible to believe in God, but not people? (I know it's a bit vague, but hopefully you'll get what I mean)

Ignorance and Worldliness are incredibly closely related, you know.

Anyone can be "in-depth." It's just called being coherent. They're speaking their minds. That's not to say a single one of them is correct, but we can respect their opinions anyway.

Nevertheless, an opinion is rarely if ever correct.

I've been thinking about my religious beliefs a lot recently, and I've come to the conclusion that there is no god, but I'm not, perhaps, atheist or even agnostic.

I think that God is one-dimensional. Everything else that goes through my mind is three-dimensional. I don't think there is anything that can make me believe that there is an arbiter of some sort in the sky who controls your fate in such a one-dimensional way, either bringing you up or lowering you down depending on your thoughts and actions. I just simply don't believe in a God.

I think I'm going to make up my own religion.

99.9% of the population doesn't understand religion at all, and that goes both for religious and non-religious folks alike.

87.63% of the population makes sweeping generalizations using arbitrary percentages, ratios, and decimals based on absolutely no actual data

Yes, and 97.24% of the population makes arbitrary percentages, ratios, and decimals up on the spot, and then has the audacity to imply that other use falsified data.
