Worst way to die in a video game (list thread)

Jumping into a spike pit in sonic the hedgehog is possibly the worst way to die in a video game. The second you hit those spikes you are filled with terrible emotions. Many a time have I accidentally jumped into the spike pits, clinging to my last ring. I'd get damaged and run after my last ring, just hanging on as long as I can. There's no way out of the pit, no way to get more rings... it's a futile, depressing effort.

It's really actually a metaphor for life.

I hate dying randomly by things that you really can't see coming unless you played that level before.

Anything cheap - offscreen hits and so on. Stuff you can't see because of the camera. Poor camera controls kills games.

And finally, having been playing Red Dead Redemption lately, bugs. Nothing drives me crazy like bugs in games. RDR ? We gots 'em.

after an hour of climbing edges ledges staires and what not in the good old prince of persia (not the newer one where u cant die...) you accidently jump forward instead of left without any sands remaining and fall to your doom just to climb the whole damn thing again i litteraly have to close the game and go somewhere else for an hour or so just to relax and not break my keyboard

When in San Andreas you're busy setting cars and pedestrians on fire and when the firetruck comes to put out the fire it runs over you. It's happened so many times already

I only just got Dead Rising, but the most frustrating thing is being swarmed by a huge ammount of zombies...
One time I had so many fucking zombies around me I think they were actually trying to rape me!
Random button mashing didn't work to get out, then I was chewed alive :(
The worst thing about it is that you know you're fucked when there's no way out, no matter how many times you press X

The worst way to die is to lose your last HP in front of a medkit and the one who killes you is lv 1 mob (who can only damage you if you have 1 hp)

I think the worst game death(s) I ever experienced were during a bit in Silent Hill: Homecoming where you're in an abandoned hotel. You've got to collect some postcards to bring back to a creepy woman who speaks to you through a hole in a door. Right before you go off to search for them, there's a save point, and you'd sure as hell better make sure you use it, because it's the last one you're going to see for a while.

Once you've searched around the hotel for a while and found the items you need, you go to bring them back, only to find that an uncomfortably large amount of terrible beasties have sprung up and are between you and your destination. This being a Silent Hill game, getting into a fight will, more often than not, end with you earning a few new cuts and bruises, so by the time you've managed to battle through the regiment of faceless nurses and sythe creatures and gotten back to where you came from, you're going to be in pretty bad shape.

And then, right before the save point, this fucker shows up.



As I mentioned before, you don't escape many fights unscathed, so there's a good chance that you're out of health drink by this point, and most of your ammo was probably used up on some of the monsters on the way back, so basically, you're fucked. So, you die, and lose a half-hour's progress. You just want to get past this part, so you keep trying, but it doesn't get any easier and every time you die you have to start from the beginning.

There's a few points in Homecoming that are similarly annoying for largely the same reasons (save points too far apart, lots of tough to kill enemies, lack of supplies) but this is probably the worst.

I'm glad this topic got revived as I was recently reminded of why I hate escort missions in games.

When YOU'RE fine, but the thing / person you're prtecting dies and you lose. That shits me right up the wall. FUCK ESCORT MISSIONS.

Why can't you run past it?

The hotel is pretty closed-quarters, so there's not much room to maneuver. I eventually did manage to get past it and crawl through a hole in the wall.

I played a game called Star Trek: Elite Force II and there's one escort mission and you're not held back if he dies, but that doesn't excuse the fact that this guy is absolutely fucking stupid. He only acts on scripts, meaning he just follows a set path, runs out into the open waiting for all of the bugs to attack him, and stays there. There's absolutely no fucking reason why they couldn't have the dude follow you like all your other team mates.

Also the rest of the game is pretty shit too.

While playing Metroid Prime Corruption's hardest difficulty, i died during the final boss battle. I restarted and was given a cutscene really similar to the one on the first level. I thought this was part of the game for about an hour until I realised I had just restarted almost 2 months of playing the hardest difficulty, and lucking out with most of the collectibles. RESTARTED PERMANENTLY. I think I almost cried.

Why ? Did you overwrite a save, or is this really what the game does to you ?

Not part of the game, but its a rare, known glitch.

If you use an exact combination of 47 attacks, it happens. Which is rare, but bullshit to those who it happens to.

Only semi-related, but when I was 10, I was DEATHLY afraid of my last Yoshi dying, to the point where I REFUSED to watch the entire "Death" cutscene and hit continue, instead quickly resetting my N64, because it scared the shit out of me.

I had dreams about dying in Yoshi's Story, which transformed into dreams about dying in video games in general, and they would always be TERRIFYING. These dreams extended in middle school, and a little into high school.

In Hedgewars:

Shooting an explosive barrel next to an enemy, only for it to not explode and instead roll down to where your hedgehog is and THEN explode.

Afraid of dying? Play Singularity on normal. I think I died ONCE.

My last Yoshi was the only instance of me actually being afraid of dying irl. The general phobia only exists in my dreams.
