| Subject: GOOD FREE GAMES Wed Sep 08, 2010 1:17 pm | |
| In this topic, we help each other find good games that are also free! Please keep in mind that when I say good, I mean GOOD good. When I say GOOD good, I mean that:
- The game should be very entertaining in comparison to the vast majority of other games. - If entertainment value is comparable to a "good" commercial game, then this is definitely preferred.
- Should have a playtime/replay value comparable to commercial games. One or the other, need not be both, so long as it's able to keep you occupied for more then just a few days, and definitely more then a few hours. - The more detail and depth a game has, the more replay value it tends to get, so this should inherently be a characteristic you look for.
- Novel concept: Has a unique twist or re-interpretation of gameplay, so that it is not just a clone of everything else.
Take those into account.
If you're unsure, post it anyways I guess, just so we don't miss anything, but my point is that it should actually be a great game you would play often, not just for a week and then get bored. Otherwise, this topic will turn into a shitfest of every single dumb crapware out there. Also, I realize that to some extent, "good" is a matter of taste, so whatevs, but don't be surprised if we yell at you for having bad taste!
In summary, my intention is that this be a topic one would actually want to look through, not just a compendium of "games on the internet".
Also, for the sake of helping me organize, please include the genre, a short description, and a longer one. Thanks

============== STRATEGY ==============
Dwarf Fortress (City-Building/Strategy/Management): http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ You + seven dwarves + randomly generated world = infinite possibilities.
- Spoiler:
Start off with seven dwarves, choose a spot in your randomly generated world, and carve yourself a home! By directing the dwarves to build workshops, make various objects or perform tasks, and other things, you must advance from a weak, vulnerable hole to a bustling, all-mighty subterranean fortress (aboveground is possible too if you really want). From farming, to forging, to mining, to crafting, and much much more, this game has TONS of facets and things to do. You MUST enjoy micromanaging to have fun with this game!
The Battle for Wesnoth: http://wesnoth.org/ Turn-based strategy game. Downloadable mods, eras, units, campaigns, and multiplayer maps.
============== Platformer ==============
Spelunky (Platformer): http://www.spelunkyworld.com/ A randomly generated rogue-like platformer
- Spoiler:
Free download for windows. It's a randomly generated platform game, but better that that makes it sounds. There are usually multiple ways of dealing with situations, depending on the equipment you have bought. Simple at heart, but complex once you get into it. Randomly generated levels mean that this one can be a real time sink.
Secret Maryo Chronicles (Platformer): http://www.secretmaryo.org/ Mario clone. Has unique powerups and pretty clever level design. NEEDS LONG DESCRIPTION
Knytt Stories (Platformer): http://nifflas.ni2.se/index.php?main=02Knytt_Stories Puzzle-based gameplay with power-ups such as wall climbing, umbrella, double jump, etc.
- Spoiler:
Comes with a level editor, which allows users to upload levels. The editor includes a wide variety tiles to choose from, allowing for creative and atmospheric design. community is very active, and there is tons of user content to download.
============== Other ==============
FreeDoom: http://www.nongnu.org/freedoom/download.html It's DOOM. DOOM .wads should work with FreeDoom I think. NEEDS LONG DESCRIPTION
N: http://www.thewayoftheninja.org/n_downloads.html 2D platformer/puzzle with physics and ninja-style wall-jumping
Elona: http://homepage3.nifty.com/rfish/index_e.html Roguelike + JRPG NEEDS LONG DESCRIPTION
Darkeden - (MMO/Diablo-style): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darkeden (No working official site?) Diablo style MMO, fun but with some balancing issues. Be wary of cheaters.
- Spoiler:
Game-play-wise it's basically Diablo gone MMO. You choose one of three factions; slayers (AKA humans) basically the weakest of the three, though they have access to guns and motorbikes, vampires (pretty much self explanatory) who can shape-shift into various animals to get around faster and/or avoid unwanted encounters, and basically kick the shit out of any slayers they come across (though they've been balanced somewhat with the re-boot) and lastly there's some other faction whose name I forget.
They were added when the game was re-booted. They're basically a race of all-female pixie people who fight with razor disk... things. I don't really know what they do or how they stack up against vampires, having never played one myself.
Anyway, if you're a fan of the Diablo style hack-slash-loot-a-thon game-play, then you'll likely enjoy Darkeden, though be prepared to forgive some broken english from the NPC's. Also, you should be prepared to run into users with hacks. This was one of Darkeden's biggest issues and, while the re-boot seems to have fixed this problem, it's something worth keeping in mind.

| I've played plenty of free games and plenty of good games, but not many good free games. I suppose Darkeden is alright, or at least it was. - Spoiler:
